Wow, well that sucks!

Seems like Bracesshop is overwhelmed by disciples of Mike Mew and the guinea-pigs of DIY orthodontics.

Has anyone come across an alternative to BracesShop? They've stopped taking orders until the 27th

I just decided to buy today, I can't believe the timing  :'(

That appliance seems very simple. I wonder how effective it would be to just bite on your thumb or a towel instead and go by feel.

Why do you say that? I don't understand why lower jaw expansion can't be good. But it's true that if I protrude my lower jaw (imagining my upper teeth are already expanded forward), my jawline looks good enough, so maybe I don't need it.

Update: I'm actually not sure by what you mean with "look like the first slice of bread". Are you saying it because I could get a square face and jaw like Dr. Mike Mew? If that is the case that is what I'm looking for. I would also expand slowly until I see a good enough result.

Here is an example of what I mean and I believe that the triangle jaw is much more aesthetic, that is why I was thinking of starting a topic some time ago if lower jaw expansion is really better and worth it. I am no specialist, nor do I have a lot of knowledge about stuff like this, so dont take my word too seriously. I just know what your goals are and wanted to throw this is in your favour, nothing more, nor less.

The 5 screw expander is the only expander offering forward growth. This may possibly help fix a recessed face. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find anyone who has used it.

Ah, yes, my bad.

I also few that this palate expander with 5 screws may be superior. I'm about to buy the one of them and also a lower jaw expander. But before expanding my palate, I want to find a way to make sure I won't have a longer face (because teeth tend to extrude when expanding). Do you guys know a way to intrude teeth? The post called "before and after" showed a case of a girl treated with miniscrews that worked perfectly, but as I am doing a "homemade" approach using a miniscrew is not an option (I will not put a screw to anchor on my palate by myself, of course). Maybe chewing mastic gum? I've heard invisalign can intrude teeth, but it's a different method. Maybe something that I can bite hard or something I can anchor above my head like a helmet? I plan to intrude a bit my upper teeth to revert my slightly gummy smile and my lower teeth which will make my chin look smaller. I guess I've found a final plan for me, just need to find this last solution. :)

If you want to retrude your teeth, just get traditional wire braces. I doubt that is what you really want, as doing so has only negative consequences. What's your situation? Do you have overbite or underbite? Deep bite? Crooked teeth or spaces between teeth?

Not a pro, but I believe that lower expansion might make you look like the first slice of bread so be advised, it might not make things better, plus when the upper widens and the lower comes forward they should straighten or at least that is what they say.

So with forward expansion that would give you more of a square jaw?

How would you know when to adjust the forward screws?

Well the thing is that most dentists and orthodontists will not use expanders for cosmetic reasons. They will use them in extreme cases of narrow palates, if they choose to. I'm thinking the expanders with 5 screws may be superior to others, because it also creates forward expansion.

Yeah it's difficult because there's not many who do diy Ortho.  We need to keep experimenting and sharing.

BTW does anyone know if it's possible to face pull with the active plate?

I've been wondering the same thing.  There are expanders with five screws. It appears that it may possibly cause foward expansion. But, I've been unable to get much information on what it exactly does.

So I was wondering if anyone here can shed light on the different types of expanders listed or why certain ones may be better for certain malocclusions.

There is the basic one and then there's a few others with a different amount of screws.

I'm just wondering if extra screws are necessary and if if they could help more with cranial asymmetry?

Also is it possible to expand while doing NCR?  Would you Leave the expander in while getting it done and then adjust it after?
