Break the Matrix

What would happen if one were to only wear a palatal expander for 12-14 hours (overnight) and practice good tongue posture and/ or chew for the rest of the day (possibly maintaining the expansion).  I do understand that the results will probably take twice as long as they would normally, but can this still be effective for expanding the maxilla?
