Palatal expansion and chewing question
« on: August 27, 2017, 05:25:15 pm »
I will be using a homemade removable bone-bound palatal expander, which I will wear every night for 9-14 hours and for the remainder of the day will practice proper tongue posture and chew for 1-2 hours to maintain and stabilize the expansion.  My desired expansion is 10 mm and I intend to attain maximum skeletal results, with high stability and minimal possibility of relapse.  How many times should I turn the expander screw per week for this?  Also is there a limit for how much expansion the mandibular teeth can compensate for?  Will there be a point that I cross which will result in a scissor bite?

Another question I have is that I occasionally bite my tongue when my molars miss the gum that I am chewing.  It is always the same spot as well, and because I am chewing with such high force, it results in immense pain, lots and lots of blood, and a sore, hurt tongue afterwards for days, making it also difficult to swallow and talk.  What causes this and how can I prevent this?

I am 17 years old, if that is relevant.

May you please elaborate more about your homemade expander?

It is the one on facepulling.com, made from the expander screw and acrylic.  So the mouthpiece will be an expander as well as for a headgear attachment, which I will wear overnight.  Would you recommend setting the headgear to pull the maxilla at 54 degrees, as shown in the diagram with monkey test subjects (http://www.facepulling.com/proof-moving-the-maxilla-is-possible-in-adults/)?

Hey! Great commitment. Mike Mew says to turn 3 times a week, which is about the equivalent of 1mm..the maximum rate in which the tissue of the midpalatal suture can adapt.
