Jaw pain from chewing falim gum
« on: April 04, 2017, 03:11:07 pm »
Two days ago I started chewing falim gum. I was considering making this post maybe after some time, but it is probably best to address things as soon as they happen and it doesnt hurt to ask, does it? So, as the title says, I have jaw pain which appears after some time of chewing, not even that long, I have been chewing since 40 minutes and the pain spread to both sides of my jaw, so here I am. I have never before had jaw pain before and had it yesterday for the first time. It also spreads to my ear, when it happens it feels like I am popping a joint, but it is slight and the memory might be lying me. I think that it might be because I am chewing a bit unseriously, what I mean by that is that I am not chewing just doing the up down movement but moving my mandible around, like for example some douchy chewing, like you feel too confident and relaxed, like an actor would for example portray someone chewing a gum and wrapping their hair around their finger :D . So, my question is, should I continue with the chewing, should I just do short intervals and with time longer. There is this also that I chew mainly on my assymetrical side and have noticed that this causes pain because there is force on just one side for too long time. That might sound like, well duh, you found the answer yourself why are you asking, but many people say they chew on one side for hours, so yeah. Should I be worried about causing TMD? In the end, I dont think stopping chewing this gum is the better option since it is supposed to be the helper, the fix, which will work to avoid this or to treat it.

Pain obviously is not the goal. You can continue chewing, but you have to stop immediately the moment it becomes uncomfortable. TMJ problems are not worth the relatively small structural changes you can get from chewing.

Thanks, Its been a hour and something and the pain has almost disappeared but I can still feel it a little, well, joint related pains do disappear slowly, so yeah. I will work on my manners of chewing and try to avoid what I see causes pain, funny thing tho, I usually chew gum a lot for hygene purposes and falim gum didnt really impress me with its hardness and I probably chew a little too hard like in a way in which to compensate for the lack of hardness in the gum, like focusing too much and diving my teeth in the gum with more than the needed force, the equivalent of which you will use in a harder gum.

I'd back off for a couple days. Go WAY more gentle, and try for fifteen minutes for let's say - 5 days. Then twenty for a few, then thirty, etc. sometimes I just chew for 20 minutes and other times over an hour. Listen to your body, and when you feel a sore kind of burn, back off and be done for the day. Go every other day, to rest your muscles.

Maybe the problem is that your maxilla is not rotated or located the right way to begin with, which simply shows issues you already may have had. It could be that after facepulling, NCR, beltfacepulling, thumbfacepulling or whatever, your issue might not come at all with the chewming. it could be some bones are dislocated from their most desired location, which by chewing shows the problem. It could be that right now something is not located right and adding pressure on it, shows the problems you might alreay have (structural problems in the literal way). This is just a theory though, but things like TMJ are usually seen in people with small jaws, and small jaws are usually recessed, maxilla low..etc

This is just an idea though, so take it for what you think it's worth.

Sorry, couldnt understand you exactly, do you mean that if I do those things stated, my issue might not come at all?

Anyway it turned out that I had really dislocated my jaw lol. Today I went to the doctor, looks like that through all the experementing I did alone yesterday I had put it back in place and now its just traumatized and needs time to recover. Luckily, he said that it should be nothing permanent, I would go and see him  after two weeks and see if everything is healing properly and write again here in order to share my case, so other people are careful with the chewing and dont have the same problem. He also said that strengthening the muscles is sure a good thing but it shouldnt be overdone by chewing too long.

He gave me an aqualizer. Has anyone had the same thing so to share some experience or how long to wear it? (it is just some cushions filled with fluid between you back teeth, so it keeps your jaw open)

Damn, that's not good.

I think what Ryan is trying to say is that when the jaws are in optimal position the joints will be able to handle stress better, because the range of motion of the mandible (= the bite) will be in line with what the temporomandibular joint wants it to be. And I have to agree. I'm not so keen on the idea of chewing a lot or hard with a recessed maxilla, precisely because of cases like yours. It's not wise to bench press or deadlift heavy with a bad form and the same is true for chewing too.

It would be ideal to achieve maxillary movement or expansion first and introduce chewing only after the bite is forward enough for mandible to follow its natural range of motion.

How is it going,TheNo0n3? Pretty sure it is related to the rotation of the maxilla, the Myo therapy clearly stated that it's possible to dislocate the jaw even if not chewing hard if you the maxilla is not placed in the good way, that's why Myo is needed (even thought Myo concerns chewing as well). while some ortho say it's OK to leave it untreated some others don't for the fact that the jaw becomes more prone to this kind of happenings... :(
Hey, thanks for asking, its getting better with everyday but still needs time, I can open my whole mouth, but keep my finger behind my jaw for support, so it doesnt go back or move improperly. Used to have glued ear but these days it has almost disappeared. At least I avoided that 400 Euro appliance. Probably  it will heal in a month or two, I can chew more and more, although I am still going for softer food.

Yeah, could be related, although I think I was moving my jaw too much in random directions and sinking my teeth unnecessary. However, that is one of the reasons why all those forum-made pulling techniques worry me, as they cause huge assymetries and rotated maxillas.

You should check the thread on handling bodies.

Jaw problems are often not just the head or even in the head at all.  It is much more than that.

 check MeningealRelease.com

You can learn ABC™ yourself with a friend and save your body as well as time and money rather than paying someone who cannot do as much.

If you go to MeningealRelease.com   ,   sign up and learn the ABC First Rib Maneuver™ your body will work better than you imagine and you will know the rest can be accomplished consistently -- rather than empty promises that only work for some.

For some the FRM opens the jaw but for many it is something else that is sticking the head.  See the last post in the handling bodies thread.
