NCR and orthodontics
« on: August 15, 2013, 05:16:38 pm »
I've been doing research on the web and doing some thinking regarding NCR and orthodontics combined. I was thinking we could brainstorm and share experiences here in this thread. There are a couple of areas I've been wondering about.

First of all, I'm treating myself with a lateral palate expander and am also trying to do self-NCR.

I was wondering if anybody knows whether you should take out the expander when inflating the balloon? My concern is that if I do, the teeth/jaws might start moving and the appliance might no longer fit. However, if I don't, the appliance might keep the teeth from going in the direction they want to go in. What are your thoughts on this?

In this interview dr. Howell talks about a guy whose jaws expanded:

Quote: "I've got a patient named Scott, who I've been treating for years. His skull is so enlarged that his dental arches have widened, and his crooked teeth have straightened out - just from the larger skull."

In a way I think that's weird because any time the upper jaw expands, the lower will have to catch up or they won't fit together. So how does that work in a case like this?

On to my next question. Rachel on this forum had NCR and her lower jaw came forward, almost like it was lengthened! How did that happen? Even though I try to jut my mandible forward as much as I can, I still don't get that much of a longer jaw.

Also, I've been thinking about retainers. Does NCR eliminate the need for lifelong retention after orthodontics? Even dr. Hang's treatment for adult patients requires a retainer for the rest of their lives. But it sounds like, with NCR, this might not be necessary because every bone in the skull will be aligned and balanced. Here's a forum post where dr. Howell talks about retainers:

That's it for now. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
I have to say this forum is very fascinating and I value your opinions.

[Post removed for the time being in order to study the anatomy of skull more, and to gain a better knowledge of it.]

Thanks for your feedback, Tyler! Don't worry about brainstorming about the skull. Most people here know that we are laymen who are boldly going where no-one has gone before. ;)
